Research Statement

The ongoing digitalization is leading to an increasing number of physical objects being connected to networks, ranging from private homes and industrial production systems to critical infrastructures. By collecting data and applying methods from artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), these systems are becoming increasingly intelligent. At the same time, this development creates new challenges for security and privacy.

My research focuses on the development and analysis of solutions to these challenges and addresses questions such as:

  • How can new systems be secured as software and protocols become increasingly complex, large scale implementations are required, cost constraints must be respected, and unified standards are often lacking?
  • How can the security of systems and networks be improved through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning while still ensuring privacy preserving handling of training data?
  • How can sustainable security mechanisms be developed that remain resilient to emerging threats and security risks over the long term, for example over a period of 20 years, which corresponds to the typical lifetime of a vehicle?
